You can sling your baby from day one!
The cardboard insert that come with your sling says, "Below 8 pounds, please consult a professional before using any baby carrier." I asked Maya Wrap what they meant by this, and the "professional" they are referring to is a babywearing professional... like me!
They recommend this because a child under 8 pounds has so little control of her body and is so tiny that she could get lost (aka suffocated) in the folds of the fabric if she is slung improperly. My job as a babywearing professional is to help you learn how to wear your baby properly (especially focusing on things like correct tightening of the sling) so she will be safe, happy, and included!
Maya Wrap's reminder is that "if your baby has poor head control, be sure to watch and listen for signs of labored breathing such as sighing, grunting, or fussiness. Baby should never be chin to chest. You should be able to put at least one finger under baby's chin. If your baby falls asleep in the sling, verify she is breathing normally. If your baby is premature, has low tone, developmental delays or weighs less than 8 pounds, we recommend you consult with a [babywearing] professional before using any baby sling."
If you have any questions at all, please email me at holdthatbaby@gmail.com. I'll write you back as soon as I can! And if it would be helpful, I'd also be happy to post a video answer on the site.
If you live in the Phoenix area, please stop by and get some one-on-one, in-person help! I want your babywearing experience to be fantastic and hope to become your resource for achieving that!
You can sling your toddler until he reaches 36 lbs!
Maya Wrap Ring Slings are tested to safely carry a baby up to 35 lbs... which is about how long your arms are tested to handle carrying a "baby," wouldn't you say? ;)
